William A. Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity (WALIPP) Receives State Charter Approval by Texas Board of Education

One of Houston’s leading charter schools, the William A. Lawson Institute for Peace and Prosperity (WALIPP) TSU Preparatory Academy is ready to expand its unique charter program following the recent approval by the State Board of Education for an independent State charter. WALIPP TSU Preparatory has been operating under an HISD charter. The autonomous State charter takes effect in the Fall 2011 and paves the way for WALIPP to move forward with its mission to expand the all boy’s open enrollment charter middle school. Enrollment is expected to double during 2011-2012 school year to approximately 300 students.

WALIPP Academy is a Texas Education Agency (TEA) recognized all boy charter for middle school students in grades 6- 8. The school was established to increase student achievement and provide at-risk youth and inner city students throughout the greater Houston-area an enhanced academic experience. The tuition free school is located on the campus of Texas Southern University (TSU). The unique charter program is rated exemplary in reading and social studies and offers STEM (Science, Technology Engineering and Math) programs, afterschool opportunities, as well as mentoring initiatives. Recognized as a school that builds character, WALIPP Academy students are referred to as “scholars” and adhere to a strict dress code to establish a sense of professionalism.

Elected officials, business and community leaders, parents and WALIPP Academy distinguished Board of Directors were all on hand to show support for the school during a press conference.

Enrollment opportunities are currently available. Parents interested in enrolling their boys are encouraged to schedule a tour and get more information at 713.741-3600 or visit www.walippacademy.org.

In the Fall of 2011, WALIPP plans to launch an all girls academy targeting middle school youth. Plans are also underway to expand the male program to 9th grade. Long-term goals include establishing an early college high school program.

“WALIPP TSU Preparatory Academy has been at the forefront of educational change in the Houston-area. Our Board of Directors and WALIPP Academy staff is grateful for the recent approval of our state charter which now opens the door for WALIPP Academy to build on the strong foundation and many years of success of educating young men in Houston. We believe WALIPP Academy’s unique approach of providing a high quality college preparatory curriculum, incorporating social development and strong parental involvement are essential for our youth to be successful contributing members of the community and be competitive in today’s diverse global society,” said William A. Lawson, Founder, WALIPP.
