Vote for BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions in 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge Qualifying Heat

BARC One Step Closer to Winning 2012 ASPCA
Rachael Ray 100K Challenge, Still Challenged by Extreme Intake

April 20, 2012 – Houston, TX- This week, BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions earned one of 50 spots in the ASPCA Rachel Ray $100K Challenge. From August to October of 2012, these shelter communities will compete to place the greatest additional number of animals in new homes compared to 2011. If BARC wins the $100K grant the proceeds will be used to purchase a Mobile Adoption Vehicle, an off-site adoption event and future pet party on wheels. The competition doesn’t begin until August, but intake this week requires that BARC and Houston start preparing to win NOW.

Over the last four days, BARC has taken in over 400 animals, including 113 kittens, 50 cats, 70 puppies and 167 dogs. The shelter must find homes for these animals. To celebrate making it in to the ASPCA Challenge, BARC has reduced the adoption fee to $20 for any dog or puppy and only $10 for any cat or kitten.

BARC always needs help finding foster homes for puppies and kittens who are too young for spay/neuter surgery, moms with litters that are still nursing, cats and dogs that are ill and need recovery time outside the shelter, and animals that just need time in a home environment until they find their forever home. Fosters are particularly needed during this capacity crisis, when the number of puppies and kittens brought to BARC skyrockets. An introductory BARC Foster class is taking place at the Heights Neighborhood Library on Monday, April 30th at 6pm.

The BARC shelter at 3200 Carr Street will also host Friends of BARC’s Wags to Whiskers adoption event on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. with free hot dogs and hamburgers. For off-site adoption event locations, directions, and hours visit the BARC website.

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help the BARC Houston shelter, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.
