UH Hosts Leadership Conference for High Schoolers Nov. 20

High School Students to Learn Leadership Lessons from UH Head Baseball Coach Rayner Noble
Fifth Collaborative Leadership Seminar Takes Place Nov. 20

Rayner Noble, head coach of the University of Houston’s baseball team, , will speak to high school students about leadership at the Rockwell Pavilion in the M.D. Anderson Library at 11:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 20.

As one of only three coaches in the history of UH Athletics to achieve more than 400 victories, Noble is well versed in leadership. In 14 seasons he has led the Cougars to three NCAA Super Regional berths, eight NCAA Regional appearances, three Conference USA regular-season titles and three C-USA Tournament championships, while amassing 499 wins. Noble has been named Coach of the Year three times. As a player, Noble was the first Cougar to earn SWC Player of the Year honors and the first UH pitcher to be named an All-America selection.

Noble’s presentation is the keynote address for the fifth Collaborative Leadership Seminar offered by UH. These are free, one-day seminars for Houston-area high school students. These seminars are a partnership between the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, C.T. Bauer College of Business, College of Technology, College of Education and the ROTC programs known collectively as the “Houston Corps of Cadets.” Previous speakers include former NASA astronaut Thomas Jones, UH Head Football Coach Kevin Sumlin and UH System Chancellor Renu Khator.

The all-day seminar includes lessons on leadership fundamentals, characteristics of an effective leader, servant leadership, planning and implementation, teamwork and “followership”, diversity and lifetime leadership learning. Two case studies are provided including a NASA teambuilding exercise and an event that applies military planning principles to planning and organizing a high school prom.

“These are the only leadership seminars in the nation presented by ROTC units and their host university,” said Col. Phil Bossert, UH Air Force ROTC commander. “This event supports the University of Houston’s continuing community outreach, an integral part of the UH attaining Tier-One status.”
