Toyota SWAC Football and Basketball Championships Move to Houston

Officials to Celebrate Partnership and Kick Off Championship Campaign

On Thursday, August 22 at 2 p.m., officials from across Houston and Harris County will hold a press conference in the West Club of Reliant Stadium to kick off a new tradition in Houston sports history.

Mayor Annise Parker, Commissioner El Franco Lee, SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp, and representatives from Toyota Center, Reliant Stadium, and Toyota Motor Sales will celebrate the Toyota SWAC Football and Basketball Championships and their home in Houston for the next three years.

The move marks the first time in HBCU history that a conference will play both its football and basketball championships in professional facilities in the same city.  The Toyota SWAC Football Championship will also include a Battle of the Bands competition with participation from all ten of the conference’s member institutions immediately following the game.
