Nation’s Ninth Largest Newspaper Recognizes Smith As The Best Candidate To Represent The Citizens of District 137
July 18th, 2012 – (HOUSTON, TX) – The Houston Chronicle has endorsed Jamaal Smith in his campaign for State Representative for House District 137. The endorsement comes as recognition of Smith’s ability to best fill the big shoes that will be left by the departure of current State Representative for District 137, Scott Hochberg.
“Jamaal Smith has the greater potential to rise to the level experience, focus and know-how that [District 137] has come to expect from its representative in Austin.” The endorsement also acknowledges Smith as the candidate with the most extensive Democratic legislative experience, as well as the candidate best able to represent the diverse population of District 137.
“[Smith’s] background gives him experience with the local issues that face Houston, but also the ability to navigate the often byzantine processes of the state legislature,” opined the Chronicle editorial. “Smith demonstrates an impressive grasp of specific issues that face District 137, and how to bring those issues to Austin. We live in a diverse city, and it needs representatives who can build coalition out of our multifaceted makeup. Smith promises to be that sort of representative.”
The Houston Chronicle endorsement adds to the growing alliance of support that Smith has gathered throughout his campaign.
“I am truly thankful to have the Houston Chronicle’s endorsement,” said Smith. “Again, this campaign has always been about the citizens and families of District 137, and I believe that this endorsement is a clear recognition of that. I hope that with the Chronicle’s support, as well as our other recognized supporters, our campaign will continue to actively engage the citizens of District 137 so to create a better community not only for ourselves, but for our children and our families as well.”
