The first ever Texas Africa Business Summit will be held in Houston on February 22-24, 2010 and is being organized by the International Trade Center (ITC) with the support of the Texas Governor’s Office, City of Houston, the Greater Houston Partnership, and leading US and African business corporations and chaired by Congressman Al Green and Senator Rodney Ellis.
The theme for the Summit is “Developing Business Opportunities Between Texas and Africa.” The purpose of the Summit is to initiate mutual public and private partnerships, promote economic growth, integration, and free trade between Texas and Africa.
Texas ranks as the nation’s top exporter to Africa, selling $7.2 billion worth of goods and services to the continent in 2008, nearly double what it sold in 2005, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Potential new markets for Texas businesses exist in infrastructure, transportation, energy, extractive industries, technology, health and tourism and related industries.
The Summit represents an invaluable opportunity for small and medium-sized businesses to find out how to directly tap into these markets. Businesses can learn about these opportunities on Tuesday, Feb 23 at Rice University, Jones Graduate School of Business, Shell Auditorium and also participate in B2B Matchmaking and the Summit Business Expo on Wednesday, Feb 24 at the International Trade Center.
Key strategic partners include the US Commercial Service, OPIC, EXIM Bank, the Texas Governor’s Office, the Greater Houston Partnership, Rice University, Jones Graduate School of Business among others. Key officials from Ghana, Angola, Tanzania, Egypt, Senegal and Ethiopia will show attendees how to do business in those respective countries.
The signature event of the Summit is the African Ambassadors’ Gala Awards Dinner which will be held on Tuesday, Feb 23 at 7:00 pm at the Houston Club. Keynote speaker for the Gala is Ambassador Andrew Young. Honorees include Dr. Kase Lawal, CAMAC International; the Hon. Ambassador Cynthia Perry; Hon. State Senator Rodney Ellis and Rob Scharar, FCA Corp.
