On Saturday, January 25, Tet FESTival Houston 2014 successfully celebrated the Vietnamese Lunar New Year and Year of the Horse at Discovery Green. The festival brought together over 25,000 Houstonians for a fun, cultural celebration.
The Tet FESTival Houston 2014 started with Vietnamese fireworks and lion dancing to scare away any evil spirits from the previous year. Mayor Annise Parker addressed the crowd to wish our vibrant Vietnamese community a happy new year. Later in the day, six celebrity contestants from the West competed against six celebrity contestants from the East in a “Celebrity Pho Eating Contest” where Tri La, owner of Kim Son Restaurant and NAM Noodles and More, beat JP Steveson, voice of the Houston Rockets, in the final round. As the evening approached, The Houston Grand Opera also performed an excerpt from “Bound” and beautiful garments were showcased in the Lavo Collections and Viet Kent Nguyen fashion shows. Viet Kent Nguyen debuted his never-seen-before wedding collection that blew everyone away.
