Owners can see bills, pay taxes and print receipts online 24/7/365
HOUSTON – Nov. 16, 2012 –More than 900,000 property tax bills have been mailed in the past few days and are available online. The bills for most of the remainder of the total 1.5 million accounts will be sent to mortgage companies, other fiduciaries and large companies by electronic means. For the 2012 tax year, the Tax Office expects to collect $4.6 billion plus in property taxes.
Property taxes for 2012 are payable on or before Jan. 31, 2013. But, if you want to deduct your 2012 property taxes for federal income tax purposes this year, the taxes must be paid on or before Dec. 31, 2012. Receipts for current taxes will show the date paid or the U.S. Postal Service postmark.
Taxpayers may pay taxes by mail or in person at any of the 15 Harris County Tax Office branches.
Taxpayers can also pay online using any combination of credit cards and/or e-Checks at www.hctax.net, and by touch-tone telephone by calling 713-368-CARD (2273). “The use of online payments grows every year as the process becomes easier and more convenient. The ability to pay online 24 hours a day every day is very convenient,” Tax Assessor-Collector Don Sumners said.
“This year, with the addition of five more jurisdictions in the county, including the Harris County portion of the Katy Independent School District, we now collect for 70 taxing jurisdictions,” Sumners said. “This is a win-win for taxpayers and governments since it reduces costs while enhancing service and adding payment options.”
The Harris County Tax Office also accepts partial payments of property taxes. Those taxpayers who need a receipt can use their bank records as proof of payment, in most instances. If an actual receipt is needed, a valid receipt can be printed at www.hctax.net.
House Bill 843, passed in 2011, authorized taxpayers to request that their property tax bills be received electronically. The Tax Office is accepting applications for the electronic delivery of 2013 tax bills by e-mail. On the 2012 tax bills is a unique e-bill code which is needed to sign up for electronic delivery of the 2013 tax bill. Go online at www.hctax.net to sign up.
“When you get your tax bill, please review it to determine if you are getting the exemptions you believe you are entitled to. If you have any doubt, please check with the Harris County Appraisal District at 713-957-7800,” Sumners said.
