“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident that happened yesterday in Tucson, Arizona, resulting in the death of peaceful residents and seriously wounding my colleague, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. I want to express my sincerest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and my unyielding support for those who were wounded. Equally important, I want to denounce what I consider a blatant attack on the American values of freedom and democracy. Representative Giffords has always worked hard in Congress for her district and it is absolutely unacceptable that the gunman took advantage of a public event with her constituents to attack her. We, as a nation, must not allow this kind of brutal, criminal act to weaken our belief and support for a democratic political system that is admired by the whole world.”

—Congressman Al Green (Texas 9th Congressional District)
