HOUSTON – The International Economic Development Council (IEDC) recently honored the Greater Houston Partnership’s Opportunity Houston magazine with an “Excellence in Economic Development Award” during ceremonies at the organization’s annual conference last month in Charlotte, N.C. IEDC presented the award to GHP for the Summer, 2011, digital version of the publication, titled “The Genius Issue: Innovation at Your Fingertips.”
It emphasizes the Houston region as a hotbed of innovation; a launching pad for technology; and features videotaped interviews with the business, entrepreneurial and medical communities. IEDC is the world’s largest membership organization serving the economic development profession. The non-profit group helps its members create more high-quality jobs, develop more vibrant communities, and generally improve the quality of life in regions around the nation and across the globe.
In 2012, IEDC will host its annual conference in Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center. “We’re pleased that IEDC – the standard bearer of the economic development profession – has recognized Opportunity Houston magazine’s spotlight of the Houston region as a place for innovation and technology,” said GHP Chief Economic Development Officer Craig Richard.
“This recognition creates awareness of the region as a major center of job creation; capital investment; and foreign trade to corporate decision-makers all around the world.” For the award, a panel of economic development experts consisting of members from both the public and private sectors evaluated the magazine and cited its “graphically nice and technically and innovative focus upon entrepreneurs.”
Through the pages of the Genius issue, readers experience firsthand the innovations that are happening in the famed Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world and also hear directly from an emerging company that has developed a camera and imaging for chemicals that will be particularly useful in the fight against cancer and other diseases. Readers also find out about the Rice Business Plan Competition (RBPC).
Founded by Rice University and co-sponsored by the Opportunity Houston program, RBPC is the largest business competition – by purse – in the world. Opportunity Houston magazine, which launched in 2007, spreads awareness of the Houston region as a premier business and trade location to national site selection consultants, domestic and international corporate decision-makers and the economic development industry stakeholders.
Both the digital and print versions of the magazine are distributed to more than 25,000 Houston area business leaders as well as to national and international C-suite executives, corporate site consultants and economic development professionals. The Greater Houston Partnership, through its more than 2,100 Members, represents the 10-county Houston region’s business interests to promote the growth of high-paying jobs, international trade and capital investment.
