Rep. Green speaks up for students and families against recent proposal to close local schools
On March 13, 2014 Houston Independent School District (HISD) board members will vote on a proposal that would close five school campuses in Houston, including Port Houston Elementary.
“Last week I sent a letter to HISD Superintendent Terry Grier expressing my strong opposition to closing Port Houston Elementary,” Green said, “Its closure would be a devastating loss to the community. It not only provides educational opportunities, but also offers afterschool programs close to home that encourage parental involvement and enhance the potential for academic success for its students. Port Houston is a key player in the future success of our children.”
Recently, parents protested school closures outside the home of Superintendent Grier, and yesterday hundreds of parents, former students and neighbors flocked to a school board hearing at Port Houston Elementary to speak out against the closure.
“It is apparent to me that our communities do not want this. We need to do everything we can to ensure that Port Houston Elementary School remains open, and that our children have a safe and secure place to learn,” Green said.
