State Representative Alma Allen, District 131, has received the endorsement of the Harris County AFL-CIO Council.
The Council had previously issued a dual endorsement in Rep. Allen’s race but last night gave its sole endorsement to her.
“Representative Allen has been with labor one hundred percent of the time,” said Richard Shaw, AFL-CIO Council Secretary-Treasurer. “She stands with us and the people on important state issues, such as public education. Experience and loyalty matter in the Legislature. Rep. Allen exemplifies those qualities—no one’s going to run over Alma Allen.”
“I am honored and humbled by the support of my friends at the Harris County AFL-CIO Council,” Rep. Allen said. “The working men and women are the backbone of our community and I will always stand with them.”
Rep. Allen has represented District 131 in south Harris County since 2005. She previously served on the State Board of Education for over ten years. Rep. Allen worked as a teacher, principal and administrator in the Houston Independent School District for 39 years and then served as adjunct professor at Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M University. She is currently a motivational speaker and educational consultant. Rep. Allen holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from TSU and a Doctorate in Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston.
In the Texas House, Rep. Allen currently serves as Vice Chair of the Corrections Committee and is a member of the Public Education and House Administration Committees.
