PARTNERSHIP TO HOST CONFERENCE ON BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES IN SPAIN

Will emphasize sustainability in energy, transportation and water sources

The Greater Houston Partnership, in collaboration with the Trade Commission of the Embassy of Spain and the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, will host the Spain – U.S. Business Sustainability Conference featuring The Honorable Miguel Sebastian, Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce of Spain. The goal of the conference is to increase institutional and business cooperation while exploring opportunities for synergy between companies in Texas and Spain. Specific emphasis will be placed on maintaining the balance between economic prosperity, environmental quality and social responsibility.

The forum will explore how public and private partnerships are critical to creating growth. Minister Sebastian will lead a delegation of businesses from Spain from the renewable energy, infrastructure/high speed rail and water treatment industries. Additionally, the conference will discuss business opportunities created by development in these critical industries. The event concludes a two-day visit during which the delegation will meet with potential partners in the Houston region.

In addition to the Spain – U.S. Sustainability Conference, the Greater Houston Partnership and the Confederation of Employers and Industries of Spain (CEOE) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which aims to increase trade collaboration and bilateral promotion of Spain and the Houston region. The parties will work together to foster increased direct investment opportunities for Spanish companies in the Houston region and facilitate market access for Houston companies in Spain.

With annual trade totaling $2.7 billion in 2008, Spain enjoys a robust international trade relationship with Houston. The region is its second largest U.S. partner, and trade between the two saw a 39.7 percent increase over the previous year. Spain is the Houston region’s 25th largest international trade partner. More than 400 Houston companies report doing business in Spain, while at least 20 Houston companies operate subsidiaries in the country.
