Partnership celebrates garcia election to lead national latino organization

Houston – The Greater Houston Partnership will host a reception recognizing Harris County Precinct Two Commissioner Sylvia R. Garcia as she takes the helm of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) as president of its board of directors.

An active member of NALEO, Commissioner Garcia becomes the first Texan and only the second woman to lead the organization. She previously served on its board of directors from 1999 through 2004. As NALEO’s seventh president, she leads a constituency of more than 6,000 Latino elected and appointed officials.

“It is a tremendous honor to have one of Houston’s own guiding an organization which represents the leadership of the nation’s fastest growing demographic,” said Jeff Moseley, president and CEO of the Greater Houston Partnership. “Commissioner Garcia has stood as an ally with the Partnership as we’ve worked on key issues such as air quality, international trade and economic growth in the region.”

Garcia has represented Harris County Precinct Two since January 2003 when she became the first Hispanic and the first woman elected commissioner. Prior to her election, she served as controller for the City of Houston for three terms.

As a county commissioner, Garcia is responsible for 500 employees and a precinct budget of $65 million. She represents close to one million constituents. Precinct Two encompasses 416 square miles and 15 municipalities including one quarter of the City of Houston. It also includes a major base of operations for NASA, the nation’s largest petrochemical complex, the Houston Ship Channel and the Port of Houston.

Joining the Partnership in celebrating this historic accomplishment will be the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Bay Area Economic Partnership, the Baytown West Chambers County Economic Development Foundation, Camara de Empresarios Latinos de Houston and the Economic Alliance of the Houston Port Region.

Admission to this reception is limited to working media covering the event. Please send RSVP to mhensley@houston.org .
