ORGANIZATION OF BLACK AEROSPACE PROFESSIONALS (OBAP) BRING PILOTS AND PROFESSIONALS TO HISD CLASSROOMS October 23-26, 2012

HOUSTON— (October 1, 2012) – The sky is limit is the message pilots and business professionals will deliver to inner-city schools in Houston Independent School District (HISD) during its 6th Annual Pilots and Professionals in Schools program October 23-26. Pilots will pair up with business professionals to offer interactive keynote and classroom presentations at over 20 local campuses.

In 2010, OBAP, previously the Organization of Black Airline Pilots expanded its membership to include all aerospace professionals including air traffic controllers, astronauts and airline and aerospace industry professionals and uses this platform to inspire children and youth to embrace STEM education, commit to staying in school and to ultimately consider the vast number of career opportunities in the industry.

Earlier this year, OBAP, the Texas Association of Partners in Education (TAPE) Community Partnership Award for Career Education and the City of Houston recognized the group’s leadership along with Lucy Bremond, Director of Strategic Partnerships for HISD for their joint impact on Houston area students through the Pilots and Professionals Program. This summer, OBAP hosted 16 boys and girls for its annual Marlon DeWitt Green ACE Academy, a comprehensive one-week camp for minority youth, ages 14-17 in the Aldine District culminating with these students training on the United Airlines 737 Flight Simulator and actually flying a small plane.

The Academy’s namesake, Marlon DeWitt Green was the first African American commercial airline pilot, a position he earned with Continental Airlines only after a trip to the Supreme Court in 1963. His legacy reveals the sacrifices and challenges of minority aviation pioneers in the industry and demonstrates the tenacity and motivation these youth need to succeed.

School visits are scheduled from 9 am – 11 am and 12 noon – 2 pm each day at area schools. For a list of participating schools or for more information contact, Xavier Samuels, OBAP Chapter President at 850-207-9789 or his e-mail to xjes06@yahoo.com.
