Only days left to register to vote in Nov. 6 election

Deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 9, Voter Registrar Sumners tells citizens

HOUSTON – Harris County Voter Registrar Don Sumners is reminding citizens that the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election is Oct. 9. State law requires citizens to be registered to vote 30 days prior to the election date to be eligible to vote in that election.

“In addition to a president, Texas will be electing a U.S. senator. Thanks to redistricting, every State Senator and every member of the State Board of Education will be chosen. Normally, about half are elected every two years. Here in Harris County, there will be a total of more than 70 non-partisan items offered by various jurisdictions. Most residents will find one or more bond issues on the ballot and/or a referendum on how Metro spends its sales tax money,” Sumners said.

If you need to register to vote or update your address or make a name change, you can obtain a voter registration application from www.hcvoter.net or at any Tax Office branch location and City of Houston community and health centers.

To be eligible to vote in the Nov. 6 election, your completed voter registration application must be delivered to any Tax Office branch location before 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 9, or mailed with a U.S. Postal Service postmark date of no later than Oct. 9, 2012.

You can visit the Tax Office Web site at www.hcvoter.net to ensure that you are properly registered.

Applicants may register to vote if they:

1. Are a U.S. citizen, and
2. Are at least 17 years, 10 months of age (to vote, you must be 18), and
3. Are a resident of Harris County, and
4. Have not been finally convicted of a felony, (unless they have completed all punishment including any term of incarceration, parole, supervision, period of probation, or have been pardoned); and
5. Have not been determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.
