Mayor’s Youth Council Members Take the Oath of Office

Members will learn about city government
and advise the Mayor and Council on youth issues

October 30, 2012. Newly-named members of the Mayor’s Youth Council took the oath of office during an inauguration ceremony held in City Hall’s Council chambers. Houston City Council member Ellen Cohen administered the oath of office to forty-four youth who will serve on the Council for a term running October 2012 to April 2013.

“We’re proud to foster government leadership among young Houstonians,” said Mayor Annise Parker. “The Youth Council offers its members an exciting opportunity to not only learn how city government works but also to develop as leaders as they carry out their role representing Houston’s young citizens.”

The new members were selected by a panel of advisors from a pool of over 300 applicants. The selection was based on the applicants’ competitive written responses to questions on the application form and personal interviews.

The Mayor’s Youth Council was instituted in 1998 to encourage young Houstonians to learn more about city government and to provide a voice for Houston’s youth. The Youth Council emulates the Houston City Council and is comprised of a Council Chair (Youth Mayor), Chief of Staff, City Secretary, five at-large and eleven district Council positions and their accompanying senior aides. The Council receives guidance and assistance from Youth Service Corp advisors and aides.

Over the course of their term, Youth Council members will develop an understanding of city government and foster a rapport with citizens, community leaders and elected officials. Members will be called upon to help make decisions affecting Houston’s youth. They will also participate in numerous public service activities. Most importantly, they will serve as the “voice” for Houston’s youth by providing formal reports on youth concerns to Mayor Parker and City Council throughout their term.

The Mayor’s Youth Council is administered by the Mayor’s Volunteer Initiatives Program (VIP), a division of the Department of Neighborhoods. For more information, call the VIP office at 832.393.0971 or visit www.houstontx.gov/volunteer.
