April 27 & May 1 family events will offer emergency preparedness assistance to persons with disabilities
The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities (MOPD), a division of the Department of Neighborhoods, is joining numerous government, community and corporate partners for May Day Houston, a series of emergency preparedness events throughout the Houston region scheduled for May 1, 2013 and proximate dates. MOPD will provide services and assistance at two emergency preparedness events intended for individuals with disabilities and their families.
Saturday, April 27 – MHMRA Picnic in the Park
MOPD will participate in MHMRA’s 11th Annual Picnic in the Park, scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., at George Bush Park, 16756 Westheimer Parkway, Houston 77082. MOPD will host a booth at the event to help residents register for Emergency Transportation and provide them with information on how to prepare emergency plans and kits. At 3:00 p.m., MOPD will host a performance by the City of Houston “Super Heroes” highlighting the importance of emergency preparedness. Wednesday, May 1 – Assistance for Persons Who Are Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Have Speech Disabilities
MOPD will join the Houston Fire Department and the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network to provide emergency preparedness assistance to individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability, Wednesday, May 1, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center, 1475 West Gray Street, Houston 77019. Individuals who live or work in Harris or Fort Bend County and who cannot make a voice to call 9-1-1 will receive assistance in registering for the 9-1-1 text service. Free visual fire alarms will be distributed to qualified persons who are deaf or hard of hearing. Prizes and refreshments will be available.
