BARC Makes Finding the Perfect Furry Companion Easy with the “Meet Your Match” Program

HOUSTON- Mayor Parker’s BARC Pets of the Week, Mimi and Cleo, represent two of hundreds of adorable adoptables with one-of-a-kind looks and personalities at BARC. BARC’s adoptable dogs and cats come in all shapes and sizes. Because of the large selection of animals – each with a different background and personality – every Houstonian is sure to find the perfect furry match for their family.

Mimi and Cleo revealed their personalities during their photo shoot with Mayor Parker. Mimi, the dog of the week, is quite outgoing and playful, and loves to be around people and other dogs. She enjoys playing but would also make a good lap dog for a calm afternoon on the couch. Cleo, the cat of the week, is as laid back as they come. She is the perfect lap cat for a family that enjoys lounging on the couch.

Mimi and Cleo have different personalities and would make great pets for families looking for specific qualities in their new four-legged companion. Understanding a pet’s personality is an important deciding factor when choosing the perfect pet. For example, one family may prefer a dog or cat that likes to lounge with the family. However, another family may be extremely active and prefer a higher energy pet that can keep up with a fast-paced lifestyle. BARC makes the adoption process as personal and convenient as possible through the “Meet Your Match” program.

“Meet Your Match” measures the “canine-ality” or “feline-alitiy” of dogs or cats by assessing them through a scientific process developed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). BARC volunteers rate dogs and cats based on specific criteria that enables them to discover the animal’s personality. By the end of the process, a dog may be identified as a “free spirit,” “goofball,” “go-getter,” or “couch potato,” and a cat may be identified as a “private investigator,” “personal assistant,” “love bug,” or “party animal.”

“Adopting a pet means adopting a new member of the family. It’s a big decision that should never be taken lightly,” said Chris Newport, BARC spokesman. “That’s why we implemented the ‘Meet Your Match’ program. We understand that finding the perfect furry companion is extremely important, and this program helps ensure you make the best choice for your family.”

Name: Mimi
Animal ID: A1111803
Breed: Chihuahua Mix
Age: Approximately 3 Years Old
More about Mimi: Mimi is a sweet and obedient little girl who makes you smile as soon as you lay eyes on her. She came into BARC as a stray but is now ready to go home with her forever family. She loves to be the center of attention and is happiest when she is around people or other animals. She is small enough to be the perfect lap dog but also likes to run and play (or should we say prance). She also walks well on a leash and appears to be crate trained. She is adorable and will make some lucky family very happy. Mimi is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped.

Name: Cleo
Animal ID: A1106815
Breed: Tortoiseshell Domestic Medium Hair
Age: Approximately 1 Year 2 Months Old
More about Cleo: Cleo is an absolutely beautiful kitty. Her tortoiseshell coloring is quite unique and beautiful and her coat is extremely soft. She is as laid back as they come. She loved being held by Mayor Parker during the Pets of the Week photo shoot and was in no hurry to leave the Mayor’s arms. She would make a wonderful lap cat for a family that enjoys having a cuddle buddy at movie time. She also gets along well with other cats. This sweet cat was even a huge hit at the recent Houston Cat Show where she got lots of attention and love. Cleo, along with the many other kittens and cats that are available for adoption at BARC, deserves a wonderful home. Cleo was fostered for a while by a BARC volunteer, but now she is ready to go home with a permanent family. Cleo is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a city license and is microchipped.

Update on last week’s Mayor’s Pets of the Week: Red, last week’s cat of the week, has been adopted! Selma, the Chihuahua mix (A1108391), is still available for adoption.

Please stop by BARC this week and give a deserving pet a new home. There are hundreds of pets available for adoption, so you are sure to find the perfect companion for your family. Visit BARC’s website to see the many pets available for adoption.

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help BARC, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.
