Notes:
“Be Amazing, Stand Up and Volunteer” celebrates the highly anticipated movie The Amazing Spider-Man, coming to theatres July 3, 2012, with a nationwide day of volunteering sponsored by Sony Pictures Entertainment. On June 26, people of all ages in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Houston, Miami and Atlanta will volunteer for public service activities their area. Volunteers will carry out a wide range of projects benefiting communities. The event also supports the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign, which funds cancer research.

In Houston, volunteers will give a much needed makeover to the Lyerly Senior Public Housing Building, a residential facility in north Houston operated by the Houston Housing Authority for senior residents and persons with disabilities. The project will be conducted with the support of the Mayor’s Volunteer Initiatives Program, a division of the City’s Department of Neighborhoods, Houston Housing Authority, Keep Houston Beautiful and KRBE-FM.

Over one-hundred volunteers will beautify the courtyard and install picnic tables, benches, planter boxes and barbecue grills. Volunteers will also refurbish the building’s recreational area and install or replace furniture and electronics. The project will benefit about 200 low-income elderly and disabled residents of the Lyerly Building.
