Managing Partner at Dufry Houston Theldon Branch Appointed to Port of Houston Authority Commission

POH Commissioner Appointed With No Discussion

Houston-based longtime business owner Theldon R. Branch, III, CEDFP, was appointed to position three, of seven, on the Port of Houston Authority (POHA) Commission today during the Houston City Council meeting.

“I believe that the best is yet to come, the next 100 years offers even greater opportunity,” Branch said.  ”I intend to be a voice for those small businesses working with labor to build the premier port in the nation.”

Branch joins the commission as a managing partner at Dufry Houston, a global travel retailer with operations in 45 countries and more than 1350 shops located in airports, cruise liners, seaports and other tourist locations.  In his role with Dufry Houston, Branch ensures all regulatory requirements and negotiates new operations at US airports.  He was also an automobile dealer for General Motors who is one of the largest manufacturers in the world.  Branch currently serves as the Chairman and CEO of The Branch Companies, which oversees his family’s investments in real estate, financial assets and the automotive industry.

The POHA commissioners hold a two-year term and are selected by the elected officials within Harris County and the city of Pasadena.  Appointees represent their area’s interests and provide guidance for officials who collectively facilitate commerce, navigation, and safe waterways promoting sustainable trade and generating economic development for the Houston region, Texas, and the nation.

Branch’s list of accolades span more than two decades, which include a Mayor Annise Parker appointee as the first Chairman of the Rebuild Houston Oversight Committee, and 25 years of service to our country in the finance and intelligence division of the U.S Army Reserve.  He is a founding member of Across the Track PAC, the strongest African American business PAC in Houston, and serves as Chairman of the TexStars Foundation.

“Mr. Branch’s service and commitment to our city is well known,” wrote At-large Council Member Stephen Costello in his nomination letter, [Branch's] “vast knowledge and experience” makes him “very well suited for this position.”

As one of the busiest ports in the world and the nation’s leading port in terms of foreign tonnage, the Port of Houston relies heavily on a cooperative nature and the 150 private companies they work alongside.  Branch strongly feels his tenure as a business owner will help sharpen those relationships and incite new ones.  As a port commissioner, Branch will help to implement policy and direction to the POHA’s executives in order to maintain an important balance for one of our most essential economic factors.
