KHOU TV’s Mia Gladney to Emcee Galveston Chamber’s 2014 Women’s Conference

The 7th annual all-day conference for women will be held Friday, April 11 at the Moody Gardens Convention Center. Keynote speaker is actress, author and co-host of CBS’s hit show The Talk, Aisha Tyler.

The Galveston Chamber of Commerce proudly announces that Mia Gladney, KHOU TV anchor, will act as Mistress of Ceremonies at the 7th Annual Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit Conference Friday, April 11 at the Moody Gardens Convention Center.

A native Houstonian, Mia Gladney is a three time Emmy award winner and has served as anchor, reporter and producer for KHOU TV since 2000. A long time community volunteer for Dress for Success, she co-founded Women of Wardrobe, a young professionals group for Dress for Success, in 2003. Gladney has a special affinity for supporting low income women in their quest for upward mobility through professional development.

Keynote speaker at the Women’s Conference is actress, author and spokesperson for Wounded Warriors, Aisha Tyler, who will address “Pursuing Bravery: Embracing Risk and Fearlessness.” Additional speakers include jewelry designer and entrepreneur Kendra Scott and herbalist/gardener Lucia Ferrara Bettler of Lucia’s Garden. UTMB physicians Dr. Sami Kilic, Dr. Vic Sierpina, and Dr. Angelica Robinson will address medical issues that are at the forefront of women’s concerns including alternative treatments, minimally invasive robotic surgery and breast health.

Fashion stylist and blogger Roz Pactor will lead a team of professionals who will transform three lucky ladies at the conference and provide tips and techniques for updating wardrobe, hair and makeup for professional development. Pactor’s team includes island based Lulu Benavidas, nationally known owner of Lulu’s The Salon, and BOI makeup stylist Courtney Goodbar of Windmiller’s Salon. Professional development mini seminars available during conference breaks are designed for sharing and learning new leadership skills. High impact 5 minute interactive business sessions will focus on marketing, branding, customer service communication, estate planning and testimonials from real business owners. Participants will gain enhanced self-awareness, forge lasting connections and participate in a forum for analyzing unique strengths. Leading the business sessions will be Connie Thomas and Karen Hix, Galveston College; Carol Ann Peters, Galveston County Small Business Development Center; Amy Hart, former corporate trainer; Maureen McCutchen, attorney, Mills Shirley L.L.C.; Doreen Hughes, Mainland Testing; and Alicia Cahill, owner, The Kitchen Chick.

Fitness breaks will inspire healthier lifestyles in a fun and entertaining way. Ashley Nixon, UTMB RN, will introduce the new fitness dance craze Fierce Funk; a throbbing Hip Hop that promises to motivate attendees to better health and fitness. Attendees are encouraged to join in to experience the movement.

The Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit conference, presented by the Galveston Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by UTMB Health and The Moody Foundation, is coordinated by women for women as a valuable tool for self-awareness, personal improvement and professional development. Tickets are $150 per person.
