The sponsorship reception was attended by Congressman Al Green, event beneficiary Rev. Leslie Smith, Executive Director of Families Under Urban Social Attack, along with a host of local, regional and national business/community leaders that have already signed on to participate in the June affair. The luncheon provided an overview of the ongoing uninsured and underinsured health care issues, staggering statistics regarding the overall health of African American’s and previewed what can be expected during the festival.
“We are privileged to live in a city where the Mayor’s health care initiatives proactively involve community leaders and businesses. Our goal is to continue and expand this partnership and event to different markets,” Rev. Leslie Smith, Executive Director of Families Under Urban Social Attack.
Mayor Bill White supports the event, as it reiterates his efforts to unite and inform Houstonian’s of the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle. Further the event hopes to give residents the right tools to eliminate the national ranking of “Fattest Cities in America” as stated in Men’s Fitness Magazine.
“We got involved because of the rising costs of health care, more uninsured citizens and the growing health concerns inside the African American community. The festival provides a comfortable environment to learn how to maintain and sustain a healthy life,” states Francis Page, Owner, Houston Style Magazine.
The annual Juneteenth Festival will be held Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Houston’s Discovery Green Park. Discovery Green’s 11.78-acre site is landscaped & equipped with many large live and WiFi. The park was constructed to host events, festivals and performances. HJMHF promises to deliver on all the park has to offer.
The Houston Juneteenth Multi-cultural Health Festival is a free one day event featuring inspirational and praise dance competitions, two stages of entertainment and demonstrations, food vendors and more than 100 health organizations, hospitals and doctors onsite to perform free health screenings and provide information. Further the event, that hosted more than 10,000 visitors last year, will have the “Real Men Cook” for local novice chefs and celebrity judges. This year the festival will highlight the ten leading diseases amongst African Americans and other ethnic groups.
A percentage of the proceeds will benefit the HJMHF fiscal agent, FUUSA (www.FUUSA.org); an 18-year-old Houston community based 501(c) 3 non-profit agency that serves adults and at-risk youths in Harris and 12 surrounding counties.
