John P. McGovern Foundation Summer Reading Program: Summer Strikes Back at the Houston Public Library June 1 – August 1, 2012

The Houston Public Library (HPL) invites children and teens up to 18 years of age to register for the John P. McGovern Foundation Summer Reading Program: Summer Strikes Back. Registration is easy, either online at www.houstonlibrary.org/summer or by visiting any Houston Public Library location. Register now through August 1, 2012 from a home computer or at any HPL location. This program rewards reading with a free book to take home in addition to other incentives. The Summer Reading Program begins June 1 and runs through August 1, 2012. The program is free and open to the public. For more details visit www.houstonlibrary.org/summer or call 832-393-1313.

The Houston Public Library’s Summer Reading Program encourages kids and teens to strike out boredom by reading during the sizzling days of summer to elevate their reading skills in preparation for the next school year. Participate by reading or listening to books, then enter the book title/s or time read on the online reading log, either at home or at a library with the help of a librarian. Upon completion, go to your favorite Houston Public Library location to pick up your prize/s at the 10, 20 or 30 book levels.

The Summer Reading Program incentives include:

5 books or 5 hour level: certificate, entered into daily prize drawing.
10 books or 10 hour level: one free book.
20 books or 20 hour level: additional free book and a coupon for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.
30 books or 30 hour level: one voucher for a free ticket to a Houston Astros game (children K-12) and entered into a Grand Prize drawing for an iPod Touch (Ages 13+), a Nintendo DSi, or a LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet.

In addition to the reading program, the Houston Public Library offers a variety of free, fun programs and performances for children and teens up to 18 years old at every HPL neighborhood location throughout June and July 2012. One Program, Two Ways to Earn Incentives for HISD Students
Any student in the Houston Independent School District (HISD) can participate in the HISD Millionaire Club just by joining the Houston Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. When they read ten books, they will be eligible to receive incentives not only from the Houston Public Library’s Summer Reading Program but also from the HISD Millionaire Club. One program, two ways to win!
