The Lunar New Year Festival this year will have an “international flavor” with many ethic groups and cultures represented. The celebration will also include a “kickoff” announcement for the First Annual “Miss International U.S.” beauty pageant competition to be held in August of 2011. The Master of Ceremonies for this year’s Lunar Festival will be Shern-Min Chow, well-known TV news anchor.

Invited guests and dignitaries include political and civic leaders and will also include several consul generals representing many counties from all over the world. A representative group of international beauty pageant winners will attend and assist with the announcement of the “Miss International U.S.” beauty pageant competition to be held in August of 2011.

Reflecting the diverse cultures of our community, the Lunar New Year Festival this year will include live performances and appearances by representatives from the Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hispanic, Philippine, Ecuadorian, Indian and Pakistani communities. There will be Hip Hop music as well as a performance by international Hispanic recording artist, Norma Montiel.

This year, the festival will also be accented by the participation of 10 chefs from local restaurants in a rousing “iron chef” style demonstration. Chinese, Thai, Korean, hispanic and chefs from other countries will attend and demonstrate a wide range of cooking skills and recipes. The Memorial Hospital System will participate and offer healthcare tests and information to festival visitors. Representatives of the Houston Rockets (Rockets Power Dance) and Houston Dynamo will also participate in the festivities. Entertainment like Shaolin Kung-Fu, martial art, ethnic dances, Lion and Dragon dances, ethic singing etc., along with a wide range of delicious Asian cuisine will be available.

Each year, this very colorful event attracts a large number of people from many ethnic groups and cultures, and with the announcement of the “Miss International U.S.” beauty pageant competition, the 2011 Asian Lunar New Year Festival promises to attract an even wider range of cultural and ethnic participation.

The Lunar New Year Festival is a centuries-old spring festival. It is the most important of all the traditional festivals for Chinese and other Asian people. Many countries around the world celebrate spring festivals in joyful celebration of the coming of springtime and harvest season.
