HCC Hispanic Scholarship Council to raise scholarship funds for students

Houston Community College will host the third annual HCC Hispanic Scholarship Committee (HSC) Luncheon Tuesday, October 8 at the Hilton Americas in downtown Houston, 1600 Lamar Street. HSC’s mission is to raise scholarship funds for Hispanic students who want to attend HCC.

The HSC will honor Irma G. Galvan, owner of Irma’s Restaurant, and Richard J. Campo, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Camden Property Trust, with the Hispanic Scholarship Council Leadership Award.

Galvan was born in Brownsville, Texas and moved to Houston at the age of five. After the loss of her husband, Galvan opened a small sandwich shop in downtown Houston to support her four children. After she switched to serving Mexican food, Irma’s restaurant grew with the help of Houston’s major designers, decorators and real estate agents promoting her business. Irma’s Mexican Restaurant has become one of the most popular Tex-Mex stops in Houston and has been featured in many magazines and won multiple awards. Though Galvan never had the opportunity to receive her degree, she strongly supports today’s children and their quest for education.

Campo graduated from Oregon State University in 1976 and immediately began his real estate career. He has spent 30 years building Camden’s predecessor companies and providing job opportunities for exceptional skilled workers in construction, technology, management, training and marketing. Campo currently serves on the Board of Directors of several organizations that focus on the economic development, business outlook and future growth of Houston. He also currently the chairman of the 2017 Super Bowl Bid Committee and was a past Board Member of the Harris County Houston Sports Authority which developed and financed the three major sports venues in Houston.

To promote Texas’ “Closing the Gaps” initiative to increase student participation rates and achievements, HCC and the Board of Trustees have made tables available for purchase by sponsors interested in supporting our students.
