HCC Faculty and Staff Propose exciting programs for third consecutive year
For a third year, Houston Community College Chancellor Mary S. Spangler has funded grants for innovative program proposals designed to improve access and success for HCC’s students.
The success of programs developed during the previous two years, which included iPhone and eBook technologies as substitutes for traditional paper course materials, generated enthusiasm and creativity in this year’s proposals.
HCC’s faculty and staff responded to a challenge from the chancellor and submitted collaborative and pioneering approaches to student recruitment, retention and completions. Four of the proposals received $100,000 each for development and implementation.
Proposals this year center on health care and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum.
Funding for the following innovative ideas was awarded based on a rigorous set of criteria.
· To establish an on-site telemedicine clinic on campus that promotes wellness to all HCC employees and affordable access to all HCC students.
· To create a Learning Community (LC) model to link courses among the Biology, Chemistry and Psychology disciplines for those students who enroll at HCC pursuing prerequisites for a nursing or allied health curriculum.
· To create a structured pathway, flowing from HCC to the University of Houston to Baylor College of Medicine that will address the various academic barriers shown to prevent underrepresented students from completing four-year degrees and applying to medical school.
· To improve connectivity between mathematics and science course content and to enhance STEM students’ ability to apply math knowledge in their science classes and vice versa.
The significant size of the grants rewards aggressive thinking and encourages collaboration among the departments and colleges within HCC. The application process for proposals was detailed and comprehensive. Budgets proposals had to meet specific criteria and will be meticulously monitored. A meticulous evaluation process will focus on demonstrating outcomes to achieve project objectives.
