HCC Central Photography Students Bring Art to Health Clinic

College, clinic partnership is just what the doctor ordered

HOUSTON (December 10, 2012) – Eighteen black-and-white photographs by students from HCC Central College now adorn the walls of a northeast Houston health clinic. The Airline Children’s Clinic, at 5808 Airline, is the new home of the canvas photographs. More than 1,100 children will see the works every month in the clinic’s examination rooms.

“The pictures have brought life to the Airline Children’s Clinic,” says Dr. Patricia Rodriquez, clinic director. “We literally had nothing hanging in our rooms. This is a way to beautify our clinic for our patients.”

“I am very proud of them all,” says art professor Bennie Ansell, who teaches photography at Central College. “This is a great accomplishment for my students and a wonderful opportunity as well.”

Ansell and Anne Whitlock, a board member for Vecino Health Centers, which oversees the Airline Children’s Clinic, developed the plan to benefit both HCC Central’s photography students and children who are treated in the northeast Houston clinic. The clinic spent $350 to professionally mount the 12-by-18 inch and 16-by-20 inch prints, which feature scenes from life in and around Houston.

“I thinks it’s a great way to highlight the work of students from HCC,” Whitlock says. “I’m about creating partnerships.”

Ansell’s student photographers – such as Julie Gallaher and Laura Roak – couldn’t be happier.

“Photography is my passion,” Gallaher says. Says Roark: “I think it’s wonderful that we can promote art for children in this clinic.
