HCC balances two graduation ceremonies

The 41st Houston Community College 2013 Commencement Ceremony exceeded expectations for all participants. HCC awarded degrees, certificates, and GED’s to more than 5,000 students this year, and 2,000 of those graduates attended the celebrations at Reliant Stadium Saturday, May 18.

Friends, family and community members, 12,400 in all, filled the stadium for the 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. ceremonies to cheer on their graduates. Jamey Rootes, President of the Houston Texans, was the keynote speaker for the 8:30 a.m. ceremony for Academic Candidates, followed by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee for the 1:00 p.m. ceremony for Workforce and GED Candidates. At the 8:30 a.m. ceremony, HCC recognized four honorary degree recipients: Munir Ibrahim, Judge Armando Rodriguez, Lupe Salinas and Linda Scurlock.

Splitting graduation into two ceremonies was a success thanks to the HCC volunteers and intensive planning before the event. The change allotted more time for the graduates to celebrate and congratulate one another after the conferment of the degrees.

Both events were streamed live and are available online at www.hccs.edu. Web visitors from 133 countries viewed the graduation ceremonies and 25,886 viewer minutes were logged.
