HOUSTON, TX – October 21, 2011 - Yesterday, the Houston Chronicle endorsed Houston Independent School District Board of Trustees President Paula Harris for her “forceful advocacy for her district.” The Chronicle joined an esteemed list of local and community groups who also support Harris for her commitment to increasing educational excellence in our schools.
The Chronicle commended Harris stating she has “pushed for a consistent program of reforms to improve school performance.”
Under Harris’ leadership the district has seen an increase in student performance, decrease in student dropout, an increase in student graduation rates and an increase in District 4 exemplary schools. Harris has worked tirelessly to secure extra funding to support STEM programs, literacy programs and the Apollo Program.
“Receiving the Chronicle endorsement means a lot to me,” states Harris. “We face tough budget decisions, however, I am committed to continuing to improve student performance, teacher accountability and community engagement and will settle for nothing less than educational excellence for the children in the Houston Independent School District.”

Paula Harris has been a champion for parents, students and schools of District IV since she was elected to the Houston Independent School District Board of Education in 2007. Under her leadership, she has increased on-time student graduation rates, decreased student dropout rates and implemented programs to enhance student development. Paula currently serves as President of the Board of Trustees.
