Members of the nation’s armed forces in Houston will soon have a new place through which they can streamline their access to higher education and alleviate many of the issues they may encounter as they resume civilian lives.
A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place 10 a.m., Thursday, August 14 for the Veterans Affairs Resource Center at Houston Community College Central, 1215 Austin St., Houston, TX 77004.
The VA Resource Center at HCC Central is the latest in a series of centers offered by Houston Community College to help members of the military make the often-difficult transition from military service to academic life.
“The VA Resource Center will be designed to help veterans inquire, get assistance with their VA educational benefits and submit paperwork for processing,” says Dr, Sabrina Lewis-Jones, Director, Veterans Affairs, for HCC. “But these centers will offer more than a place for veterans to register for classes. A VA counselor will be on site to help veterans – and his or her dependents – with family crises, readjustment issues, secure additional resources and much more.“
About 600 veterans attend HCC Central as students. Overall, HCC has more than 3,400 veterans enrolled in its six colleges. HCC currently has three VA resource centers: one each at HCC Southeast, HCC Northwest and HCC Southwest. The resource center opening August 14 at HCC Central represents the district’s fourth. All are part of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ VetSuccess on Campus program. HCC was selected as one of only 94 colleges and universities nationwide for the VetSuccess on Campus program, which helps veterans access educational benefits and other services.
The VA Resource Center at HCC Central will feature computer stations for veterans’ use, as well as a ”quiet room” where veterans can study, receive tutoring or just take a break from campus life.
