Galveston Chamber of Commerce Announces Donation Drive Supporting Local Heroes at the Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit Conference

The seventh annual conference will take place on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston, Texas.

On Friday, April 11 hundreds of women will come together for a day filled with laughter and learning at the Galveston Chamber of Commerce’s annual Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit conference at the Moody Gardens Convention

Center. Entering its 7th year, the conference, a joint project of The Galveston Chamber of Commerce and The University of Texas Medical Branch, is deigned to inspire, motivate, and enrich the lives of women. The theme for this year’s conference is “Super Sisters,” and this year’s event will highlight a special and often unrealized role of first responders, who countless times each day bravely respond to help us during our most terrifying moments.

Local EMS, fire and law enforcement departments respond to thousands of people in distress each year, many of them children. In addition to offering protection, first responders also seek to provide some measure of comfort and reassurance to these children. First responders find it helpful to have various items for children to hold, which help relax conversation or provide a much needed distraction for kids in highly stressful situations. In response to this need, the Galveston Chamber of Commerce and the Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit team have kicked off a county-wide donation drive for the items listed below to support the courageous and difficult work done by these heroes among us:

  • Small blankets
  • Small stuffed animals
  • Small soccer balls, footballs and basketballs

The Junior League of Galveston County will staff a booth at the conference to collect these items. In addition to collecting these items at the event, citizens can support the effort by donating these items to any of the following drop off locations in advance of the conference on Friday, April 11:

  • Galveston Chamber of Commerce
  • Patty Cakes Bakery
  • Modern Family Haircuts
  • Lulu’s Salon
  • Island Auto Wash on 61st (10% discount for all who donate!)
  • Moody Gardens
  • MOD Coffee Shop
  • Shykatz Deli

Yvette Shulz of UTMB Health and the Junior League, Holly Hopkins, owner of the MOD Coffeehouse, and Maria Dunn, owner of Lost Bayou Bed and Breakfast are coordinating the donation drive on behalf of the conference. Please contact Holly ( or Yvette ( for additional information regarding the donation drive.

This year’s conference promises to deliver with the most incredible lineup of speakers to date. Everything centers on the focus of Mind, Body and Spirit. To enrich the minds of area women, well-known jewelry entrepreneur Kendra Scott will talk to our women about how to turn their passion into a business, just like she did when she started her own company with just $500. Now her exquisite jewelry is sold globally. New to the conference this year, our high-impact and interactive business breaks will help our attendees sharpen their professional skills and business savvy.

To promote wellness in women’s bodies, UTMB Health doctors who are leading the way in their fields of medicine will educate conference attendees with the most cutting edge women’s health information available. Lucia Ferrara Bettler will discuss health from the earth using herbs and essential oils. Additionally, fitness breaks will demonstrate the most exciting ways to get fit, and style expert Roz Pactor will help conference goers stay on top of the latest trends for women as she discusses “Style in 2014.”

To renew the spirits of local women, keynote speaker Aisha Tyler is sure to entertain and uplift. Author, actress, comedian and activist, she currently serves as co-host of the popular CBS daytime talk show The Talk. Aisha is an active volunteer for Wounded Warriors, Planned Parenthood, American Red Cross, The Trust for Public Land, and Doctors Without Borders. Her latest book, Self-Inflicted Wounds: Heartwarming Tales of Epic Humiliation, was an immediate New Your Times Best Seller. Aisha’s talent and versatility sparked her rapid ascent in Hollywood, and her hot-streak stint at the head of E! Entertainment’s Talk Soup landed her firmly in the spotlight. Critical acclaim for Aisha has been effusive. Esquire called Aisha “sweetly wicked,” designating her one of its “Women We Love”. The title of her presentation is Pursuing Bravery: Embracing Risk and Fearlessness.

On top of all this excitement, conference attendees can shop ‘til they drop in the incredible vendor market featuring fashion, accessories, health products, home wares and so much more! Following the conference attendees can enjoy a complimentary cocktail at the Fireball happy hour as the momentum continues in the vendor area with multiple door prize drawings.
