The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum and The Women’s Fund have collaborated to host “Is Your Family Fighting the War Against Obesity?”, Saturday, March 19th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., by combating the growing problem of obesity through interactive education for the surrounding community. Along with other health organizations, including Dr. Veon X McReynolds, director of the Tour De Hood bike riding group, will sponsor a bike ride at the conclusion of this event, please bring your bike.

Kelly Young, Executive Director of Women’s Fund, will discuss the importance of reading labels while shopping, how calories can be controlled, and how proper serving sizes of food can help maintain good health.

There will be opportunities to learn about healthy eating habits, engage in physical activity, and practice basic nutrition skills, networking with individuals who can assist you with ways to improve your health. The theme: “Is Your Family Fighting the War Against Obesity?” includes fun-filled activities for everyone, such as live performances from local shining stars, innovative and fun ways to improve your-health, and tasty healthy snacks. While touring the Museum (tours are $5.00-per person, $3.00-students and seniors-60-up, children 5 and under-free), participants will be able to interact while discovering more about the brave men and women of color who served in every great American war and military campaign. Lastly, individuals and families will have the opportunity to win several passes to museums and other fun events in the community, along with door prizes.

Council Member Jolanda “Jo” Jones - At Large Position 5, will share health insights from her early years in sports. Up and coming artist, 15-year-old – Russia Bimage, may make an appearance, according to her parents Steven and Angela Bimage, Russia has been singing since the age of eight. Her singing credits includes: Opening for Stephanie Mills, Jeffrey Osborne, Cheryll, Micheal Henderson, and she will perform at the Fantasia’s after-party.

The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum is a 501 (3)(c) non-profit organization that opened in Houston, Texas in 2001. A proud member of the Houston Museum District, the Greater Houston Conventions and Visitors Bureau, and the Greater Houston Partnership. It is the only museum solely dedicted to preserving the legacy and honor of the Buffalo Soldiers.

The Women’s Fund for Health Education and Research is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing women and girls in the Houston area the tools they need to be advocates for their health. The Women’s Fund is best known for outstanding publications and eduction programs for teens and women.

The Texas Health Plan joins The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum and The Women’s Fund to host “Family Help for Healthy Living” Event

Admission: $5.00 per person or $10.00 per family (up to 4 family members and Admission includes a Healthy Lunch)
