Davis signs four year contract with TSU

HOUSTON- Texas Southern University head men’s basketball coach Mike Davis has signed a multi-year contract, TSU Director of Athletics Dr. Charles McClelland, has announced. The contract will run through the end of the 2015-16 season.

Davis is set to begin his first year at Texas Southern in 2012-13 and has started the process of getting the program on track to be one of the premier basketball programs in the state of Texas.

“I’m very thankful and excited to be the head men’s basketball coach at Texas Southern University,” said Davis. “My family and I love the City of Houston and for me personally I see this as being a great opportunity. Anything that can be achieved in the game of college basketball can be achieved right here at Texas Southern.”

When beginning the process of finding a new permanent head men’s basketball coach Dr. McClelland sought to find an individual with a proven track record of taking programs to the highest level both athletically and academically. His search led him directly to Davis who has shown the ability over the course of his career to lead programs to prominence both on and off the court.

“We’re ecstatic as a university to be able to reach a four-year agreement with Coach Mike Davis,” said McClelland. “This is another sign of the university’s athletics program moving in a positive direction. He’s a great fit and his transition into the university and the athletics program has been seamless. The student-athletes have jelled around him. Coach Davis is an outstanding coach and we know he’ll do a great job for us over the next four years and beyond.”

TSU will start its season on the road against Boise State on November 11, followed by a quick turnaround game versus Northwestern on November 13. The Tigers are slated to host their first home game of the season on November 16 as they welcome Louisiana-Lafayette to the Health and Physical Education Arena for a non-conference match-up slated to tip at 7:00 pm.
