As a member of the House Judiciary Committee Rep. Mel Watt is a protector of freedom and justice, says Congresswoman Jackson Lee
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement today on the Senate’s confirmation of Rep. Mel Watt as Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA):
“For the past 20 years I have served with Representative Mel Watt on the House Committee on Judiciary and I have observed up close his knowledge, passion and integrity when it comes to Judiciary, Financial and Housing issues. During his 20 years as a corporate and real estate attorney and subsequent service on the Committees on Financial Services and the Judiciary, Rep. Watt has been a staunch advocate for policies that protect the American people from damaging financial practices and that expand the availability of affordable housing for low-income and middle class families. With the confirmation of Congressman Mel Watt to the FHFA, the Senate and the President Obama have chosen a proven leader with a history of tirelessly working across the aisle to ensure pathways to economic opportunity are open to all people.
“Throughout his career in public service, Rep. Watt has worked tirelessly to expand economic opportunity for the middle class and those striving to get into the middle class. He has brought together consumer advocates and industry leaders to enact common sense reforms that promote economic growth and protect consumers from fraud. Most recently, Rep. Watt played a critical role in passing the Dodd-Frank Act and spearheaded legislation to eliminate predatory lending practices in the real estate market. Rep. Watt will make sure we have a productive Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
“His Congressional career builds on more than two decades in the private sector as a small business owner and expert in economic, real estate, consumer protection and business development law. Rep. Watt is uniquely qualified, has the specialized knowledge and the commitment required to address our nation’s broken housing market that has affected so many families across this country. He has an incredible attention to detail and recognizes the need to examine every issue closely to consider the impact policies may have on individuals and communities. Rep. Watt will be the transformational leader the FHFA needs to make sure this country stays on the path to full economic recovery. As a former Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, he has led efforts to ensure that Congress works for all Americans, addressing critical issues from unemployment to education, poverty, and access to opportunity
“I congratulate President Obama and his Administration for making such an outstanding choice in Rep. Mel Watt for this position. His Congressional career builds on more than two decades in the private sector as a small business owner and expert in economic, real estate, consumer protection and business development law.”
