“Continental Airlines Should Stay Put.”
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee vowed today to work tirelessly to keep Continental Airlines based in Houston.
Numerous press reports have said that merger and airport relocation discussions between United Airlines and Continental Airlines could mean that the new airline’s headquarters would be relocated to Chicago.
“This is unacceptable,” said Congresswoman Jackson Lee. “Houston has embraced Continental and it is part of this city. Continental is part of Houston’s landscape. We all know someone who works for Continental and appreciate all that they have done to make this a better community. We would like to see those relationships continue.”
It has been reported that if the two airlines merged, the new airline would relocate to Chicago because it is a major financial center. “There is no reason for Continental to move from Houston,” Congresswoman Jackson Lee said. “Houston is a regional center for commerce and industry and is a strategically located gateway to Latin America. Furthermore, Houston has two modern airports and is a major international trade and business hub. Houston represents the future of commerce and economic growth in our country and keeping Continental in Houston will benefit both Continental and our community.”
