CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON LEE TO CO-HOST A VIP RECEPTION RECOGNIZING NINE HOUSTON-AREA MATH AND SCIENCE TEACHERS

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee along with The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy will host a VIP Reception on Thursday, February 18, 2010, recognizing teachers from the North Forest Independent School District for their completion of an intensive professional teaching workshop. Each of the nine teachers who participated in The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy will be presented with a Certificate of Congressional Recognition signed by Congresswoman Jackson Lee for their commitment to improving education.

“We must recognize these outstanding teaching professionals for their service to our children and to our community,” said Congresswoman Jackson Lee.

The Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is a week-long intensive professional development program for school teachers, designed to provide educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to motivate students to pursue careers in math and science. The Academy was created by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation and ExxonMobil in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and Math Solutions. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee assisted in the selection of the nine North Forest Independent School District teachers who participated in the professional development program by making her personal recommendations to the Academy.

President Barack Obama recently expanded the “Educate to Innovate” campaign for excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

“This is an effort to support President Obama’s goal of improving education in our inner-city school districts and to make math and science education a priority” said Congresswoman Jackson Lee.
