FRIDAY IS THE LAST DAY TO TAKE TEST AND APPLY FOR CENSUS JOBS!
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee announced today that Friday, May 7, is the last day for those applying for Census jobs in their communities to take a skills test. The jobs will pay $8 to $24 an hour for positions ranging from clerk to supervisor. The Dallas Regional Census Center, which includes Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, is expected to hire about 125,000 workers.
“The 2010 Census will be used to make decisions about the construction of new schools, senior citizen centers, hospitals, roads, and bridges,” said Congresswoman Jackson Lee. “It also is used to justify the need for social services such as the school lunch program and emergency services. This is why it is so vital that everyone in the community be counted in the 2010 Census and workers apply to count their neighbors. Every year, the federal government distributes more than $400 billion to state and local governments based on census data. This is why it is urgent that everyone be counted.”
“I am particularly concerned about correcting the undercounting problems in Harris County. Harris County was one of eight counties estimated to have lost more than $100 million in federal funds from undercounting in the 2000 Census, according to a report by PriceWaterHouseCoopers. As of April 27, the national 2010 Census participation rate was 72 percent compared to 65 percent in Harris County.
Last day for applicants to take test and apply for Census jobs in local communities. Applicants must have proof of identification such as a passport or two other valid types of identification, including one with a photo such as a driver’s license.
