Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, joined by METRO Board Chairman Gilbert Garcia, Larry Green, CEO of HoustonWorks, USA, and Houston Rapid Transit officials are announcing an initiative that will train thousands of people to work on METRO’s light-rail expansion project. The initiative will provide workers with the skills they need to be hired for the new construction, operations and maintenance jobs needed to construct the new light-rail lines. “I am thrilled to be here today to announce this program that I sponsored and worked on since 2003 that will put more underemployed and jobless Houstonians back to work,” said Congresswoman Jackson Lee. “We need more training programs like this to create better-paying jobs in Houston.” The program will provide training for a number of jobs needed by METRO such as electricians, truck drivers, welders, plumbers, carpenters, concrete finishers, mechanics, and machinists.
