Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston, a Senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee and Chairwoman of the Transportation Security and Infrastructure Protection Subcommittee of the Homeland Security Committee, responds to President Obama’s speech on the oil spill in the Gulf Coast.
Congresswoman Jackson Lee said, “Tonight the President of the United States, Barack Obama established that he is in charge of the oil spill in the Gulf Coast region, and that he is caring and committed to the people of the Gulf Coast. It is important that we reform the claims system to ensure that the people of the Gulf Coast communities are made whole as quickly as possible. All of the individuals and businesses, including the fishermen, oystermen, shrimpers, tourism, seafood processing plant owners, boat builders and supply companies impacted by the oil spill must be compensated for their losses. However, it is also important for the thousands of workers and their jobs in the oil industry that we find the means to develop a seamless integration of energy resources such that we can save lives, save jobs and save the environment.”
