Congressman Al Green (TX-09) will host three town hall meetings to inform the Houston area about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for low to moderate income working individuals and families. Representatives from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as well as tax preparation specialists will be available to assist attendees with their 2009 tax returns and help them determine their EITC eligibility.
WHO: Congressman Al Green (Texas 9th Congressional District), Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials and community representatives.
WHAT: Three Town Hall Meetings to inform the Houston community about Earned Income Tax Credit and to offer free Tax Preparation.
WHEN: Saturday March 27th 2010 at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
-Alliance for Multi-Cultural Community Services / 6440 Hillcroft Avenue
Houston ZIP Code: 77081 (From 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM).
-Bethel’s Place-Fondren / 12525 Fondren Rd. (Suite A)
Houston ZIP Code: 77035 (From 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM).

Houston ZIP Code: 77085 (From 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM).
WHY: According to data from the IRS, since 2002 the number of tax returns claiming EITC has surpassed 20 million every year. These returns resulted in refunds of $36.9 billion in 2002 and have progressively increased to $49.3 billion in 2008. However, in Houston alone, it is estimated that working families lose between $15 and $35 million in unclaimed EITC dollars. These town halls can be particularly useful because participants will have the opportunity to learn about a relatively unknown resource that could make a big difference in the current economic circumstances in the United States.
