Center for Houston’s Future Builds the Next Generation of Millennial Leaders

HOUSTON, TX, July 2012 – Building strong civic and business leadership for tomorrow requires purposeful and focused work today. After a dozen years of meaningful research, long-range planning, and leadership development, Center for Houston’s Future has launched a new seminar designed to build the NEXT wave of millennial leaders.

On June 20, 2012, the Center gathered a diverse group of under-35 leaders to participate in LeadershipNEXT, a one day session providing key leadership insights for the 21st Century global economy, critical milestones in Houston’s history and demographics, one-on-one conversations with Fortune 500 CEOs, and opportunity to build on the next generation of transformative regional leaders’ network.

The seminar included guest speakers, John Hofmeister, Founder & CEO of Citizens for Affordable Energy; Dr. Robert Ivany, President of the University of St. Thomas and retired Major General of the United States Army; and Anthony Potoczniak, of the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University.

Russ Capper, founder of The Business Makers Show, and a graduate of the Center for Houston’s Future Business/Civic Leadership Forum class of Spring 2011, was the moderator for the Ask the CEO panel with Houston area CEOs Kenneth Guidry, Pannell Kerr Forster of Texas, P.C.; George Martinez, Allegiance Bank Texas; and Umesh Verma, Blue Lance, Inc. Mr. Capper commented, “Based on my experience with the Center’s Leadership Forum, my expectations for this first LeadershipNEXT class were high. These young folks wildly exceeded those expectations. This is a ‘make it happen’ group of future Houston leaders!”

Santana Perez, with Amegy Bank of Texas, commented on her experience, “I really enjoyed getting to know everyone in the group, with their diverse backgrounds, coming from very diverse companies – we probably wouldn’t have crossed paths in any regular setting.”

LeadershipNEXT is the necessary and logical next step after conducting twelve dynamic years of Business/Civic Leadership Forums. The Forums are held twice yearly for the purpose of ‘deepening the bench’ of diverse and established regional leadership and honing skills that drive lasting civic change. LeadershipNEXT included a briefing on the Center’s Scenarios 2040 project, with the hopes that participants will navigate not only their own future success, but also that of the Houston region.
