Bee Busy Wellness Center will expand its services and team up with NBA first-round draft pick Royce White and his non-profit organization – Anxious Mind’s Inc to provide comprehensive mental health care to residents of Southwest Houston, and other underserved populations on the city’s Southwest side, announced Bee Busy Wellness Center’s CEO Norman Mitchell.
The Royce White Institute of Mental Health will be located in the Bee Busy Wellness Center located at 6440 West Belfort, and will be the first comprehensive behavioral health center specifically targeting the underserved communities of Greater Houston.
“We are excited to collaborate with Anxious Mind’s Inc., to increase access to mental health services in our communities,” Mitchell said. “With the expansion of our services into this often overlooked area of healthcare, Royce and I hope to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health in our communities, and to address the root cause of some of the societal ills disproportionately affecting individuals of color.”
Royce White turned the national spotlight on mental health as he advocates for his anxiety disorder and its affects on his own professional basketball career.
“Having advocated for mental health, and experienced challenges with my own illness, I see the desperate need for other people to get diagnosed, support and treatment. I’m glad to be able to help provide that, especially in economically disadvantaged areas like Southwest Houston,” White said.
Mental health care has long been an issue for the underserved, low-income, and homeless populations serviced by the Bee Busy Wellness Center. There are a limited number of area providers who offer mental health services to these populations, which led the Bee Busy staff to seek alternative options to care for its patients.
“This is a need we’ve been working on for a while,” said Darcy Padgett, Founding Board Member of Bee Busy Wellness Center. “When we heard that Royce White wanted to open his first Mental Health Institute, we saw this partnership as an opportunity to reach those who may be undiagnosed through Royce’s celebrity, encourage them to seek testing and ultimately treatment. At that point, we ironed out how we could expand our services to meet this need.”
Bee Busy Wellness Center & the Royce White Institute of Mental Health has the potential of serving tens of thousands of people annually and can be an integral source of local employment and economic growth in the underserved and low-income communities of Southwest Houston.
