BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions Launches “Meet Your Match”

Program expands effort to ensure a positive adoption experience at BARC

HOUSTON, TX – Today, BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions officially launched “Meet Your Match,” a new and innovative program designed to help adopters locate the dog or cat that best fits their personality. The program expands BARC’s effort to make the pet adoption process as convenient, personal, and permanent as possible and to ensure pet owners go home with a compatible dog or cat. BARC is kicking off the program with $20 dog adoptions and $10 cat adoptions through the end of May.

“Meet Your Match” measures the “canine-ality” or “feline-alitiy” of dogs or cats by assessing them through a scientific process developed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). BARC volunteers rate dogs and cats based on specific criteria that enables them to discover the animal’s personality. By the end of the process, a dog may be identified as a “free spirit,” “goofball,” “go-getter,” or “couch potato,” and a cat may be identified as a “private investigator,” “personal assistant,” “love bug,” or “party animal.”

Potential adopters complete a survey to identify which animal personalities best fit the lifestyles preferences of their families. Once BARC volunteer behavior experts determine the “canine-ality” or “feline-ality” of the animal, BARC pairs adopters’ personalities with the perfect pet. By implementing “Meet Your Match” and encouraging adopters to spend time with pets before making a final decision, BARC goes the extra mile to ensure a successful adoption experience and a lasting relationship between a pet owner and their pet.

BARC often takes in more than 100 new animals in a single day during the Spring and Summer months. May is one of the busiest intake months for the shelter, which leads to a wide variety of dogs and cats available for adoption. Each animal receive vaccinations, microchips and spay/neuter surgery and many of them are immediately assessed in the “meet your match” program. With many animals to choose from and the implementation of “Meet Your Match,” now is the time to adopt from BARC.

BARC is also asking Houstonians to recycle their newpapers at the shelter. Newspapers may be dropped off at the shelter during normal business hours. The BARC shelter at 3200 Carr Street will also host Friends of BARC’s Wags to Whiskers adoption event on Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. with free hot dogs and hamburgers. For off-site adoption event locations, directions, and hours visit the BARC website.

The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help the BARC Houston shelter, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.
