BARC’s Free Adoption Weekend Event a Huge Success

Weekend Promotion Resulted in More Than 165 Pet Adoptions and Nearly $1,300 in Donations

HOUSTON, TX- BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions waived all dog and cat adoption fees last weekend, resulting in more than 165 pet adoptions and nearly $1,300 in donations to BARC. In addition to adoptions, nearly 50 animals were taken to foster homes, transferred to a rescue group, relocated via Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) feral cat program, or returned to their owner. The adoption event was the first of its kind hosted by BARC.

“We owe a big thank you to Bed & Biscuits Pet Spa in Houston for making this event possible,” said Carlene Lormand, BARC Marketing & Outreach Manager. “We see a huge spike in dog and cat intakes this time of year and a successful event like this is a step forward in finding a forever home for every homeless dog and cat in Houston.”
The generous donations provided by BARC adopters over the weekend will sponsor pet adoptions for a special event from Friday, June 8 through Monday, June 11 at BARC’s facility. BARC will join other shelters around the U.S. on Monday, June 11 for the national no-kill “Just One Day” event.

Throughout the weekend, adopters took advantage of BARC’s recently launched “Meet Your Match” program. The program is designed to help potential adopters identify the cat or dog that best matches their personality. In conjunction with spending time with the dog or cat prior to adoption, the “Meet Your Match” program helps ensure each adopter goes home with the perfect pet. The program also helps BARC identify individuals who are not ready to adopt a pet from BARC and to minimize returns of adopted animals.

All animals adopted over the weekend received a full pre-adoption package including spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a City of Houston license tag and a microchip. This adoption package could cost up to $850 if purchased through certain breeders or veterinarians.

In addition to events like the one sponsored by Bed & Biscuits Pet Spa, BARC provides other special opportunities for Houstonians to add a furry friend to their family. For example, BARC offers a free “Seniors for Seniors” placement program for pets over 3 years old for Seniors 55 and older all year. The BARC facility also hosts Friends of BARC’s Wags to Whiskers adoption event at 3200 Carr every Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. with free hot dogs and hamburgers. The tireless Friends of BARC volunteers welcome all potential adopters, fosters and volunteers.

BARC also offers a robust volunteer foster care program that allows individuals or families to temporarily take dogs, puppies, cats or kittens into their homes until the animal is ready for adoption. This is an ideal opportunity for Houstonians who are not ready for permanent pet ownership, but want to help Houston’s homeless animals by providing a loving atmosphere for dogs and cats as they wait for their forever home. The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help the BARC Houston shelter, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.
