HOUSTON, TX – Throughout the Astros 50th anniversary season, the team will continue its mission of making a positive difference in the community through numerous charitable programs and partnerships. Highlights from the season’s first homestand include the annual Opening Day blood drive, a special salute to Iraq War veterans and the return of several Astros military recognition programs.
April 6-11: Community Clubhouse
Description: Astros Community Clubhouse LogoThe Astros Community Clubhouse is located on the main concourse behind section 107. This booth is a central location for many in-park community activities, including Astros In Action Foundation memorabilia auctions and Astros Buddies Kids Club membership registration. On select game days, the Community Clubhouse area also provides charities with an opportunity to make information available to fans about their cause.

Description: AIAF-Logo (hi-res)New in 2012 is the Astros In Action Foundation online, silent auction. Each time the team returns to Houston for a new homestand, the Astros In Action Foundation will host an online auction featuring autographed memorabilia. A few items in this homestand’s auction include an Astros “young stars” package featuring autographed baseballs from Jose Altuve, J.D. Martinez and Brian Bogusevic and an autographed Carlos Lee jersey. Bidding opens on Friday, April 6, at 12:01 a.m. CT and closes on Wednesday, April 11, at 11:59 p.m. CT. April 6: ASTROS OPENING DAY BLOOD DRIVE
Description: GCRBC LogoWebHosted by the Astros, ARAMARK and the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, the team’s annual Opening Day Blood Drive will be from 12:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in Union Station at Minute Maid Park. Anyone donating or attempting to donate will receive a special Astros T-shirt and be entered into a drawing for tickets to a future Astros game. Donors need not possess a game ticket to donate blood; however, they must have a game ticket if they plan to attend the 6:05 p.m. game. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good health. The process takes less than an hour and one donation can save up to three lives.
APRIL 6: ON THE HOME FRONT
Description: Astros On The Home Front LogoLaunched last season, the Astros are pleased to be hosting On The Home Front again in 2012. With the help of USO Houston, the Astros welcome several military families that have a loved one serving away from home to a special Astros experience that includes an on-field batting practice visit and tickets to the game one Friday a month. Each participant’s ticket is loaded with $15 that can be spent at most concession and retail stands at Minute Maid Park. APRIL 7: WELCOME BACK IRAQ WAR VETERANS
The Houston Astros and the City of Houston are working together to host a special parade and ceremony for veterans of the Iraq War on April 7. Beginning at 4:00 p.m., Iraq War veterans are invited to parade through downtown on Texas Avenue, starting at San Jacinto and turning in front of Minute Maid Park on Crawford Street. At the end of the parade, the troops will proceed inside the ballpark for an on-field, pregame ceremony. In addition, Chase, in partnership with Operation Homefront, will present one Iraq War veteran with the gift of a mortgage-free home. The Astros are donating tickets for the evening’s game to all uniformed parade participants and their immediate families. The veterans will be served dinner during the game courtesy of Minute Maid, Papa John’s and Frost National Bank.
APRIL 8: HOME SWEET HOME:
Description: Astros Home Sweet Home LogoAn important program that gives all fans the chance to thank active duty service members returns in 2012. Each Sunday home game, the Astros host the Home Sweet Home program sponsored by Budweiser. This program welcomes a small group of active, recently returned military personnel and their guests to a special Astros experience that includes a player meet and greet. The group watches the game from a suite, catered with complimentary food and beverages, and is introduced to the crowd prior to the seventh inning singing of “God Bless America.” USO Houston coordinates the participating military members. APRIL 9-12 and 14: ASTROS URBAN YOUTH ACADEMY
Description: AIAF-Urban Youth Academy LogoThe Houston Astros Urban Youth Academy (UYA) is conducting free baseball and softball instruction for all Astros UYA members. Hours of instruction are offered on Monday – Thursday from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in the Jimmy Wynn Training Center and on Field No. 1. 2012 SEASON: OPERATION VETERAN APPRECIATION
Description: Astros Operation Veteran Appreciation-LargeOperation Veteran Appreciation returns in 2012 and is a specific tribute to veterans for their past service. Each Astros home game, one veteran and their guest attend a game courtesy of the team, watching from two unique and patriotic-themed seats. These specially designed red, white and blue seats are field level behind home plate in section 119, row 31, seats 11 and 12. Each of the tickets is loaded with $15 that can be spent at the ballpark and veterans are given a uniquely designed Astros military challenge coin.
