Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a senior member of the House Committees on Judiciary and Homeland Security and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, released the following statement about the President’s persistence in making unfounded claims despite being debunked by the F.B.I. Director:
“Mr. Trump’s early morning tweets over the weekend about President Obama’s alleged wiretapping of Trump Tower have no basis in fact, are seemingly unfounded and frightening. According to media reports, F.B.I. Director James Comey has asked the Justice Department to reject these baseless allegations. And yet the President and his people persist.
“This attempt to distract the American people from the on-going probe into Russian ties with the Trump campaign during the presidential election is shameful. The former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has said he had no knowledge of any wiretaps. And as a member of the House Judiciary Committee, I know that wiretaps can only come under a Title III Court or under a FISA Court which deal with foreign agents.
“The President’s actions are troubling and bare upon the future ability of the American people to trust him or his administration.”
