The 2014 UN Day celebration, held on October 23 at 6p.m. at the Junior League of Houston, located at 1811 Briar Oaks Lane in Houston marked the adoption of the UN Charter in 1945.
“The annual celebration is significant because it reflects the global diversity of Houston, the unique international educational programs of the UNA, and the importance and need of the UN to continue its mission of fostering global peace,” stated Hon. Teta V. Banks, President, UNA Houston.
Special Guest, UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Hon. Stephane Dujarric de la Riviere attended as the keynote. The 2014 awardees were Ambassador Edward Djerejian, Founding Director of the Baker Institute at Rice University, recipient of the 2014 Global Impact Award, and Mr. Vincent Maggio, recipient of the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award. Special acknowledgements of the work of the UN and UNA-Houston was given by the Mayor’s Office, the Consular Corps of Houston, the U.S. Congress, and the United Nations Foundation.
Special performances were by the Impande South African Drum and Dance Troupe, the B.E.C.A (Colombia dancers), pianist Dr. Yung-Chui Wang, and the UNA International Choir.
