Litftoff Houston! Orientation Sessions Begin

Orientation sessions for the “Liftoff Houston!” Business Plan Competition begin Saturday, May 18, 2013. Sponsored by Capital One Bank and in partnership with the Houston Public Library (HPL) and the Office of Business Opportunity (OBO), “Liftoff Houston!” aims to engage and empower Houstonians seeking to start a new business in Houston by providing them with access to essential information, resources and support necessary to develop a sound business plan as a first step toward realizing this goal. The competition will take place in four stages – orientation, workshop, mentoring, and presentation, over a six-to eight-month period. To be eligible, applicants must be in the start-up phase of their business and only in operation for less than one year or with revenue of less than $10,000, must live in Houston and plan to operate their business in Houston. The top three finalists will receive much needed capital to invest in their business. Capital One Bank is providing cash prizes totaling $30,000, including a $15,000 grand prize, to the winning business plan submissions.

Registration currently is underway and continues through May 30, 2013. All participating applicants must attend an orientation that will provide a general overview of the competition application and judging process and requirements. Participating applicants will be assigned a professional business coach/mentor and a personal financial advisor. Participants will have several opportunities to attend one of the mandatory orientation sessions, which will be offered in May 2013 at select libraries citywide; the schedule is included below.

About The Competition
The “Liftoff Houston!” Business Plan Competition is designed to encourage Houstonians to achieve the goal of business ownership while contributing to the local growth and sustainability of the Houston economy.

To successfully research, develop and present the business plan, participants are required to have an HPL card, attend workshops offered by industry experts, ranging in topics from business plan basics to presenting plans to financial institutions, and attend information sessions to learn about the vast resources available to support new business startups through HPL and OBO.

Additional support will also be provided through professional business mentors to help participants further refine their business plan.
