Mayor Parker’s BARC Pets of the Week, Stripey and Mandy, Ready to Win the Hearts of a New Family
Houstonians will have another opportunity this weekend to meet BARC’s adorable adoptables out in the community at the annual Houston Pet Expo at Reliant Center on Saturday, April 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Not only will Houston Pet Expo attendees have an opportunity to meet pet experts, enjoy pet-related entertainment for the whole family and discover a multitude of local pet businesses, but they can also adopt a dog or cat from BARC and learn more about how to help change the lives of Houston’s homeless animals by becoming a BARC volunteer or foster pet parent. Attendees can even speak one-on-one with BARC employees or volunteers about which volunteer or foster opportunities at BARC work best for their lifestyle. BARC has many volunteer and foster options that can easily fit into even the busiest Houstonian’s schedule. ”We really enjoy taking our adoptable animals out into the community, especially for such a large, community-wide event like the Houston Pet Expo,” said Chris Newport, BARC spokesman. “Not only can more BARC dogs and cats go home with their forever families, but we can also educate Houstonians on how they can help make a difference in the lives of the thousands and thousands of animals that come through our doors every year.”
BARC plans to take up to 15 adoptable dogs and cats just like this week’s Mayor’s BARC Pets of the Week to the Houston Pet Expo this year. BARC’s adoption fees are as follows: Dogs are $50, cats are $20, and puppies and kittens 4 months and younger are $75 and $35 respectively. BARC’s pet adoption package includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a one-year city license, a pre-registered microchip with lifetime registration and more. Details about BARC’s adoption process and requirements are listed on the “About Adopting at BARC” page on BARC’s website.
Houstonians interested in adopting an animal, volunteering or fostering a pet can visit www.HoustonBARC.com for more information. BARC’s facility, located at 3200 Carr Street, Houston 77026, is open for adoptions every Tuesday-Wednesday and Friday-Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
Mayor Parker’s BARC Pets of the Week and the hundreds of other adoptable animals at BARC deserve new and loving families that are as amazing and kindhearted as they are. Stripey and Mandy are two examples of the many wonderful animals at BARC that deserve a second chance at life in a home where they can get the attention they deserve.

Stripey is a very sweet cat that deserves a great new house with window seals from where he can watch birds outside and a family that he can enjoy long afternoon naps on the couch with. Stripey is a Tabby/Domestic short Hair mix and is a little over one year old. He enjoys being held and really likes to explore his environment. While he tolerates dogs, he might enjoy a home best without a canine sibling. Plus, in case it’s not obvious, Stripey is very photogenic and camera-friendly which makes him a perfect candidate for a glamour shot photo at his new house. Stripey is a BARC PurrFurred pet which means he has been at BARC for longer than 20 days, so stop by and adopt this kitty this weekend. He is neutered, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a one-year city license and has a pre-registered microchip with lifetime registration. He is ready to go home immediately. Stripey’s BARC ID is A1132145.
Mandy is a very sweet girl that came into BARC as an owner-surrender and is now ready to go home with a new and forever family. She is a little shy at first, but she quickly warms up to new people and new environments. This little girl is a Chihuahua mix and is about 3 years old, so she’s well out of her puppy stage. Every week, the Mayor’s office has treats waiting for the pets of the week during the photo shoot. This week, treats were the highlight of little Mandy’s day. It became evident that Pup-Peroni is the fastest and most efficient way to her heart. She also loves car rides and will enjoy a day on the town with her new family. Mandy is a real sweetheart and deserves a family as wonderful as she is. Mandy is spayed, has age-appropriate vaccinations, has a pre-registered microchip with lifetime registration and a one-year city license. Mandy’s BARC ID is A1134930.
Update on last week’s Pets of the Week: Rai (A1127611), last week’s cat of the week, is still available for adoption at BARC. Cole, last week’s dog of the week is still available for adoption at BARC. Visit BARC’s website to see the many pets available for adoption.
The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help BARC, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.
